Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What is chiropractic?
Chiropractic is based on the following principles:
- Your body is able to heal itself.
- Your brain controls your body functions through your nervous system and spinal cord.
- Your spinal cord and central nerve system is inside and around your spine.
- Misaligned spinal bones (subluxations) can affect nerve function and causes ill health.
It really is that simple!
Chiropractors are experts in the science and art of detecting and correcting subluxations of the spinal bones. When spinal function is optimised, nerve function is too, because they are so closely related. As your nerves function better, it can improve your health.
Chiropractors do not claim to cure anything. However, there is a very strong body of scientific and medical evidence that you are better off having a well functioning spine and nervous system rather than not.
The chiropractic principles follow that your body is able to heal itself, that your brain controls your body functions and does so through your nervous system and spinal cord. Your spinal cord and central nerve system is inside and around your spine, meaning that misaligned spinal bones (subluxations) can affect nerve function.
Will it hurt?
No. Initially for those who are acute with pain, there may be some discomfort however this will be from contacting inflamed areas of your body, not the adjustment itself.
After an adjustment many clients report feeling such as being ‘freed up’ or having ‘all the tension gone’. Most clients find the experience of being adjusted very pleasant.
There are many modifications that can made when adjusting the spine taking into account a patients size, age and bone density so that the adjustment given is safe, specific and beneficial.
They say a picture is worth a thousand words. In general, chiropractic x-rays are pictures taken of your spine in the standing position. X-rays are a diagnostic tool that can show tumors, fractures and birth defects. They are also an excellent tool for analysing postural and biomechanical disorders of the spine as well as and degenerative changes that may be taking place.
Once this information is gathered, your chiropractor will be able to give a far more accurate prognosis and effective recommendations so that you can get the most out of your care.
This x-ray taken of the neck demonstrates a healthy curve (lordosis).
This curve acts like a shock absorber, absorbing daily bumps and knocks without damage to the discs in between the bones (vertebrae) and delicate nerves that the vertebrae protect.
If properly cared for and maintained, this individual has the best chance of enjoying a lifetime of unrestricted movement of the neck and a properly functioning nervous system, which is essential for optimal wellbeing.
This x-ray demonstrates what we refer to as “Phase 1 Subluxation Degeneration.”
Note that the neck has lost its normal lordosis and is trending forward. Every inch the neck travels forward from its normal position increases the weight the shoulder and neck muscles need to support by a factor of 10.
It is quite common that people in this phase experience no neck pain whatsoever. However, the neck is not as strong nor as stable as it should be and if left uncorrected will start to degenerate into Phase 2 Subluxation Degeneration.
Specific chiropractic adjustments in phase one can help to restore the normal cervical lordosis.
Here is an x-ray of “Phase 2 Subluxation Degeneration.”
Note the rough edges on the front of the bones – these are “spurs” or osteophytes.
People in phase 2 may still not experience any symptoms or neck pain. Whilst specific chiropractic adjustments may help to restore the normal cervical lordosis, the results are less predictable. At any rate, the spurs will be there forever.
If still left unchecked, this cervical spine will most likely progress into Phase 3 Subluxation Degeneration.
This x-ray shows “Phase 3 Subluxation Degeneration.”
Note that there is little to no space between some of these bones. They are actually fusing together.
The body is such an amazing thing that some people in this phase will still not experience any neck pain! Obviously, the lack of pain in this instance does not indicate a lack of problem.
Chiropractic can help to make the best of a bad situation in this instance.
How long will it take?
This depends on an infinite range of factors. The most common contributors that need to be considered are:
- How long have you felt the symptoms of this complaint?
- How long has the complaint been there, and hence what phase of subluxation degeneration are you in?
- Are there any complicating factors e.g. diabetes, poor circulation, poor exercise, poor diet, etc?
To maximise the rate of healing ensure you eat a great diet full of fresh salads, vegetables and fruit. Drink plenty of filtered water. Exercise regularly. Follow you chiropractor’s recommendations for home care and visit frequently.
Do I need to come back?
No. Many people hesitate going to see a chiropractor because “you have to keep going back.” Not true.
Many people attend this clinic initially in substantial pain. As their pain starts to reduce and their spines and nervous systems begin to improve they begin to notice changes elsewhere in their body, in things they may not have initially even mentioned.
Everyday clients tell us things like “my heart burn is gone, I no longer need medication for that,” or “I’m sleeping better now,” and “I have so much more energy these days.” As a result, these people elect to get adjusted regularly to keep their spines and nervous systems in optimal condition so that they can get the most out of their health and bodies. Typically, if you’re sitting in our reception area, you may notice there are a lot of smiling, happy people around you.
How long you want to receive the benefits of chiropractic care is entirely up to you. If you are just after pain relief we can help, and if you want to reclaim and prolong a state of optimal health we can help you there as well.
